This article examined the primary barriers in existing
state legislation that inhibit the availability of national
models of advance directives. The analysis focused on the
Five Wishes advance directive, because it comes as close
to a national advance directive as any in circulation. Mr. Sabatino
is Director of the American Bar Association's Commission on Law
